Main Idea: In this week’s study, we will be looking at why it’s important to remember and understand what we learn, and we will look at some simple actionable steps from the Bible that you can actually do to help you boost your memory!

1 Why is it of great value that we remember what we learn? 2 Timothy 3:16-17

2 What do we need to do so that we really understand and remember the things we learn? Psalm 111:10
Note: If we want to understand something well, we need to “do,” or be active and engaged with it. Learning is not a spectator sport. How can we be active learners?

3 Why does the Lord give us wisdom and understanding when we do His will? Deuteronomy 29:29

4 How can we avoid forgetting the lessons we’ve learned? Isaiah 30:8
Note: One way to be active is to take notes! The simple act of recording the blessings of God does so much. Part of why we forget the lessons we’ve learned in the past, is because we don’t write them down or journal.

5 How can we get greater clarity on and remember the things we want to learn? Luke 2:46
Note: Asking questions is a great way to engage with what we learn! When we don’t understand, we can raise our hand or write a comment. Questions demand answers, so when the answer comes we’re more likely to remember it.

6 What’s one of the most effective ways to remember what we want to learn? 1 Peter 3:15
Note: One of the most effective habits of active learners is answering the questions of others. It is much easier to learn and remember when we teach because we get to learn it twice!

7 What can we physically do to be an active learner? Ecclesiastes 7:29
Note: Posture matters. How would you sit if this was the most interesting thing you’ve learned? That activation is really something we can do. I’ve been to lectures and things with the attitude that I’m not going to learn anything… and guess what? I didn’t learn anything! But other times I’ve gone in expecting a blessing, and you know what happened? I found tremendous blessings!

8 How can we fasten what we’re learning into our memory? 1 John 1:1

Note: Engage your 5 senses. The more senses that you’re able to engage, the more riveted and fastened your memory will be. This can be used in that verse you wanted to learn, or the names you want to remember. Make it visual, audible, something you can tangibly handle. There’s no limits to what you can learn when you engage your senses into what you learn.

9 What is essential to all engaged learning? 2 Corinthians 3:18
Note: Being focused and paying attention is very key to learning anything. What we focus on, changes us. If we want to remember, we need to pay attention.

10 What do we need to give ourselves permission to do while we’re learning? Ecclesiastes 9:10
Note: The art of memory is the art of attention. It is learning to train ourselves to be present. It would be good for us to be focused and engaged in what we want to remember. If we don’t give ourselves permission to be present where we are and we’re trying to do other things at the same time, we can’t really do anything with our might. Let’s give ourselves permission to be present where we are.
